Perennial - Gardeners' Royal Benevolent Society

A career as a gardener has many attractions. The chance to create beautiful gardens and the opportunity to work with nature, being among them. However, there are prices to pay for what may seem to some as an ideal job. The hours are extremely long, often the work is solitary and unfortunately, it is not well paid. If the job comes with accommodation, there is also the concern about what happens when due to illness or advancing years the job finishes - there is a good chance that a home is lost as well.

One of the country's oldest charities, Perennial - Gardeners' Royal Benevolent Society offers support to those working in, retiring from or had partners in the horticultural industry. Its range of services include residential care for the elderly, sheltered housing for those wishing to live independently, one- off grants to cope with special needs, maybe to make living with a disability more bearable, long term assistance for those who are struggling with finances, advice and friendship.

Recognising a rapidly changing world in gardening and its associated trades, the charity is responding by broadening its horizons of activity. It wishes to be seen as the natural partner to the industry, offering help where it is needed, moving on from its image of only helping retired professional gardeners.
This all costs money - much of which is donated by the general public. By visiting a garden under the National Gardens Scheme, you will help us to help those who have played such a major role in the gardens we see today.
